Complete Guide to Tokens and Coins

Tracking who is who and what's happening at the table can be one of the biggest challenges for a Game Master. That was the inspiration behind the tokens and coins lines from Dice Dungeons. We wanted tools that could keep a group organized without sacrificing immersion. Over several successful Kickstarters we developed character coins, inspiration tokens and condition rings that are both functional and beautiful.

Our Original Character Coins

all class character coins

The first Kickstarter we launched was for our All Class Character Coin Set. Each set contains twelve engraved metal coins, one for each core D&D class: barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, warlock and wizard. The coins are designed to fit perfectly on 1 inch battle mats so they can stand in for miniatures during combat. On one side is a detailed emblem representing the class, and on the other a broken weapon or shattered spellbook to indicate a fallen character. Because they are solid metal they are easy to carry and will not blow away when a player breathes too hard. Flipping a coin to show an injured hero helps everyone see at a glance who is still in the fight.

We later returned to Kickstarter with Character Coins 2.0. Instead of classes, these sets represent races and ancestries. The coins are meticulously crafted and perfectly sized for 1 inch grids. Engravings depict iconic species like elves, halflings and dragonborn, and we expanded the lineup with imaginative options such as mech folk and bird folk. Whether you want to mark a noble dwarf or a cunning goblin, there is a coin that looks the part. Both versions of our character coins were created as miniatures you can carry in your pocket, giving players a consistent way to represent their characters across multiple tables.

Inspiration Tokens

The inspiration mechanic in Fifth Edition is easy to forget when you are juggling combat, roleplay and exploration. Our Inspiration Tokens make heroism tangible. Each metal coin features a fierce dragon on the front and the Dice Dungeons compass on the back. Because they are sized to fit on a 1 inch grid, you can place them next to a character miniature to remind a player they have inspiration to spend. We offer both antique gold and antique silver finishes, and they come in singles or packs so you can reward multiple players. Handing a player a physical coin when they roleplay their flaw or make a bold choice reinforces the moment and encourages more of the same.

Condition Rings and Spell Effect Rings

Forget scribbling “haste” or “faerie fire” on a sticky note. Our Condition Rings clip around standard miniatures to track ongoing effects. The Spell Effects set includes fourteen enamel filled metal rings labeled with common conditions and spells: Armored, Bane, Bless, Blink, Cursed, Dominated, Enlarged, Flying, Faerie Fire, Haste, Hunter’s Mark, Polymorph, Slow and Summoned. Each ring fits snugly over a 1 inch base or can hang from larger monsters. They are an elegant alternative to plastic bands or bottle caps and keep the battlefield clear of clutter.

If you prefer a more minimalist look, our Text Free Condition Rings use vibrant colors instead of words. Assign each color to a condition before the session begins, and then slide the matching ring onto a miniature as needed. Because the rings are made from sturdy metal they will last for years and add a splash of color to your maps.

Why Tokens and Coins Matter

Game Masters have a lot to track: hit points, initiative orders, spells, conditions and more. Tokens and coins lighten that mental load and make the game smoother for everyone. When you can see at a glance which fighter is raging or which wizard is concentrating on a spell, you spend less time asking questions and more time adventuring. Tokens also travel well. They take up less space than miniatures and are durable enough to toss into a backpack for conventions or living room one shots.

Dice Dungeons started as two friends creating tools they wanted for their own tables. Today our tokens and coins are used by gamers around the world. If you are looking for a way to streamline play while adding a touch of artistry to your sessions, our inspiration tokens, character coins and condition rings might be exactly what you need.
